The apparent fragility of healthcare systems globally has prompted a profound transformation across the healthcare ecosystem, with efforts aimed at confronting workforce pressures and the increasingly complex challenges around population health. Recognition of an urgent need to design sustainable and resilient healthcare models has given new impetus to innovation, which through this research we have seen manifest in the following ways.

Together, these initiatives strive to balance access to high-quality and timely healthcare for those who need it, with providing the tools and resources that empower people to take an active role in their wellbeing.

Our research shows that:

Artificial intelligence (73%), digital therapeutics (70%), new home-based care (69%) and wearable technology (65%) are expected by healthcare leaders to play a significant role in shaping the future of healthcare. Our research shows that the integration of these technologies has the potential to improve preventative care, increase patient engagement and empowerment and enhance overall health outcomes.

These trends and developments indicate an evolution in healthcare, accelerated by COVID-19 and advances in digital technologies. We can expect organisations and services across the sector to look and feel fundamentally different by the end of the decade.

But are organisations and systems prepared to evolve?
Do healthcare providers have the capacity to think strategically about the future?
Are consumer health companies equipped to provide the holistic experience consumers are looking for?
Will innovations in life sciences actually reach the patients that need them most?
And ultimately, how best can collaboration between stakeholders strengthen population health?

To answer these questions, Gate One, a specialist management consultancy that is part of the Havas network, has conducted a survey of over 750 healthcare leaders across the UK, the US and Ireland. The stakeholders participating in the survey included senior leaders in consumer health, pharmaceutical and life sciences, as well as leading hospitals, healthcare providers and other public sector health organisations (see terms in glossary).

We also interviewed 11 senior leaders across the healthcare ecosystem to understand their perspectives on how innovation, technological advancements and new delivery models are opening up opportunities to improve patient outcomes. These in-depth interviews showcase the steps that the most forward-thinking organisations are taking to adapt to the transforming landscape.

While 78% of healthcare leaders rate the pace of change as ‘fast’ or ‘very fast’, only that they can make all the changes required in order to keep up. Our research and insights are directly informing the way we leverage our sector understanding within Gate One, helping our clients navigate these changes and stay ahead of the game.
